Birds
Feathers, flight, and how birders identify what they see.
Birds are the only living animals with feathers. Nearly every distinctive feature of the group — hollow bones, a keeled sternum, air sacs, a high metabolic rate — relates to the demands of powered flight.
Adaptations for flight
- Feathers give lift, insulation and steering.
- Pneumatised bones are hollow and strut-braced, cutting weight without strength.
- Keeled sternum anchors the large flight muscles.
- Air sacs pass air through the lungs in one direction, so gas exchange happens on both inhalation and exhalation.
Field identification
Experienced birders lead with shape and behaviour rather than colour, because colour shifts with light, age, season and wear. The working sequence is size and silhouette, then posture and flight style, then habitat, then plumage detail, then voice.
Migration
Migratory species navigate using the sun, star patterns, the earth's magnetic field and learned landmarks, with the mix varying by species. Timing is cued mainly by day length, which is why arrival dates are more consistent year to year than weather is.
